THE TRAGEDY OF APRIL 10, 2009
THE TRAGEDY OF APRIL 10, 2009
On Friday, April 10, 2009, a tragedy that left two students dead struck the HFCC campus. The HFCC Theater Arts Department would like to extend its sincere condolences to the families of Asia McGowan and Anthony Powell.
The HFCC Mainstage Winter production is dedicated to the families of Asia McGowan and Anthony Powell. The HFCC Theater Arts winter mainstage production is THE ODYSSEY, by Nobel Prize winning author Derek Walcott. Walcott, winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature, vividly re-imagines Odysseus' wanderings from fallen Troy to his island kingdom of Ithaca.
HFCC’s Gerry Dzuiblinski directs this inspired adaptation of one of the most well-known epic poems of all time. Travel with Odysseus as he encounters the giant Cyclops, the sorceress, Circe, kings, ghosts, mermaids and other amazing creatures, as well as gods and goddesses who vie with one another to ensnare the hero on his 10-year voyage to reach his family and the kingdom he left to fight the Trojan War. The show has an original score by adjunct faculty Anthony Lai. The choreographer is Janeen Bodary, Artistic Director of the Pryzm School of the Arts. Technical Direction is by Gerry Dzuiblinski. Lighting is by Chris Bremer and costumes are by Judy Fletcher.
The show will take place at Ford Community and Performing Arts Center Studio A, located at 15801 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.

Message from the President
“We are all deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred on campus last Friday. Despite the fact that our emergency plans and systems were successfully implemented, isolated incidents such as this can still occur. Our first priority must be to provide a safe and secure learning environment. We will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to ensure the safety and security of our college family.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to our students, faculty, and staff, the Dearborn Police Department, the Michigan State Police, our Board of Trustees, and the members of our external community for their support of the College at this difficult time. It is at a time such as this that we are reminded of the value of community. I trust that we will move forward with a renewed commitment to each other, our college and our community.”
